Many people have emphasised on the use of reflecting when learning. A main avenue to take note of your reflective learning is that of a blog. i.e Tumblr and Blogger. With a blog you can interact in so many ways such as learning, communication and technology. Alas with a blog you can input all your thoughts and feelings about a various topics of your choice which is why some may say blogging is better and easier than keeping a journal.
Kolb in 1984 suggested that "experience alone does not provide a sufficient learning experience in many situations" due to this suggestion Kolb went on and created a cycle inn which can be entered at any point, however all points must be followed in order for a person to be able to well and truly learn. The learner must make the correlation between te theory and the action by reflecting and then relating it back to the theory.
In brief this cycle is..
1 - Experiencing
2 -Reflection
3 - Conceptualisation
4 - Planning
Gibbs 1988 also suggested a cycle of learning and reflection, however more in depth than Kolbs, it has 6 steps. unlike other theorists and their cycles, his takes into account peoples feelings and emotions whilst they reflect on what they have been taught.
His steps were as follows..
1 - Description
2 - Feelings
3 - Evaluation
4 - Analysis
5 - Conclusion
6 - Action plan
How to reflectively learn.
In order to learn in a reflective manner we must note and write down our thoughts and feelings as well as the information taught during a lesson. Learning in this way is seen to be the best because you are talking about various things. Reflective learners consider their motivation towards the topic, their attitudes and ideas, the skills needed for learning and if anything is preventing them from working to their highest ability and if so, how they can over come this obstacle.
When reflecting on a blog as such, the learners have a main set up of what they talk about. It tends to be what they are learning, how they are learning about it, what they're using, what their strengths and weaknesses are, what their priorities are in regards to learning the subject and how well they are working towards their goals.
Reflecting upon a subject is excellent as you are thinking over what you were taught during your lecture/seminar and so it gives you a chance to research anything that you may have missed or something that you might not have made sense off in class. It also is a journal of your progress throughout the duration of your course as you can see at the beginning your "beginners" ideas and opinions on the subject and so you can compare in a few years time and then see for yourself how much you have grown intellectually towards the subject.
